The classic chicken and waffles recipe combines the best of both sweet and savory worlds, and the two flavors are showcased in a Brown Sugar Chicken and Waffles Breakfast Casserole and a Honey Mustard Chicken and Waffles Sandwich. These are the perfect back-to-school recipes that are fun, easy, and perfect for the whole family!
Have you ever had chicken and waffles before?
As some of you know, I was (and am) a big waffle person—especially in college.
No joke, waffles were my life. Ninety percent of my mornings began with Eggo waffles because they were quick, easy to take on the go, and 100% delicious.
We also hosted “Waffle Wednesday” every Wednesday evening at our apartment (which was basically just an excuse to get everyone together and hang out over some sweet waffles and maple syrup).
And finally, chicken and waffles. They were a big deal in college.
I know chicken and waffles have been around for a long while now but for some reason, they were really popular back when I was in college. It probably had to do with the fact that we were all feeling newly independent and loved the fact that there was a chicken and waffles diner nearby we could go to at midnight.
And these Sweet and Savory Chicken and Waffles recipes are every bit as good as the ones in my college days.
Apart from my love of waffles, I am a big sweet and savory person. I love salty and sweet snacks, like chocolate covered pretzels or even chocolate covered potato chips (I know, I know…that might be making some of your cringe, but it’s shockingly good!).
So while it’s fairly natural that I would be a fan of a dish like chicken and waffles, let me give you a little nudge in that direction if you haven’t tried it yet. Whether it’s this Brown Sugar Chicken and Waffles Breakfast Casserole or this Honey Mustard Chicken and Waffles Sandwich (with an avocado honey mustard coleslaw!), I think you’re going to L-O-V-E it!
Let’s talk about where you can buy all of these ingredients for these recipes: Albertsons.
I’m a tried and true Albertsons shopper as they always have what I need in stock, the store is always clean, and everyone is so incredibly friendly there. For the products in this recipe, you can find your Morningstar Farms products in the freezer vegetable section, Eggo waffles in the breakfast freezer section, and Kraft Honey Mustard in the salad dressing section.
Both of these recipes are incredibly easy to make, entirely fun, and completely delicious.
It can be difficult to put something together for dinner during the hectic back-to-school time of year. These easy recipes take only a few minutes of prep since the majority of the staple ingredients are right from the freezer.
Plus, who doesn’t like a little winner winner brinner dinner?? (Don’t hate me, please.)
Okay, so let’s talk about the Brown Sugar Chicken and Waffles Breakfast Casserole. This recipe is incredibly simple to make, and the combination of the sweet brown sugar topping and Eggo waffles with the savory Morningstar Chik’n Nuggets makes this a perfect breakfast or brunch recipe!
Brown Sugar Chicken and Waffles Breakfast Casserole Tips & Tricks:
- This breakfast casserole is similar to a french toast casserole, but the Eggo waffles replace the bread in the recipe (and it’s awesome!).
- I would definitely suggest toasting the waffles before putting them in the casserole, as toasting them keeps them from getting soggy and helps them absorb more of the egg mixture.
- Soak the casserole for 15-20 minutes first, then add in the Chik’n Nuggets and top with the brown sugar crumb topping.
Honey Mustard Chicken and Waffles Sandwich with Avocado Coleslaw Tips & Tricks:
- The coleslaw is made with Kraft Honey Mustard, avocado, and apple cider vinegar. It’s sweet, tangy, and pairs perfectly with the savory aspect of the Chik Patties.
- Due to the avocado, the slaw should be made right before it’s served. Otherwise the avocado turns brown (similar to how homemade guacamole can turn brown).
- Definitely toast the waffles, as the toasting will help support the sandwich and slaw.
Are you ready to explore your sweet and savory side?? These family-favorite freezer staples can help you create a fun and amazing recipe, perfect for any meal of the day!
- 16 Kellogg’s® Eggo® Homestyle Waffles, lightly toasted
- 8 MorningStar Farms® Chik’n Nuggets, fully cooked
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup half & half
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 6 Tbsp butter, cold and cubed
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease an 8x11 casserole dish.
- Toast the waffles until lightly golden brown, and cut them into smaller pieces (I cut each waffle into sixths). Spread in an even layer in the casserole dish.
- Pour eggs, half & half, cinnamon, and maple syrup into a blender. Blend until all ingredients are combined. Pour the mixture over the waffles, and let soak for 15-20 minutes.
- Cook the nuggets according to the package directions. Once cooked, cut into smaller pieces.
- Stir the nuggets in with the waffles until they are evenly dispersed in the casserole (I used a rubber spatula to gently mix the nuggets in with the waffles).
- Mix flour and brown sugar together.
- Using a fork or pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour and brown sugar. Once the mixture begins to resemble crumbs, add in the maple syrup. Continue to work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the center doesn’t jiggle when the baking dish is gently shaken.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve with maple syrup, if desired.
