This homemade strawberry banana milkshake recipe is lighter than a traditional milkshake recipe! Frozen bananas replace the ice cream in this recipe, giving this healthy strawberry banana milkshake a thick texture that is naturally sweetened!
If there was one thing in the world I couldn’t live without in the summer, it would probably have to be milkshakes. When you’re sweating and it’s about 1000 degrees outside (and you’ve never felt more attractive in your life), milkshakes, ice cream sandwiches, and frozen yogurt pies are pretty much the only things to make you feel better.
The biggest problem is that the sweltering heat and swimsuit season are inevitably intertwined, making it the biggest question of your life whether or not the milkshake is worth it (it usually is 😉 ).
Decisions, decisions.
Luckily for all of us, I’m sharing with you a recipe for a healthy strawberry banana milkshake! While some might refer to this as a glorified strawberry banana smoothie, I did make some alterations to this recipe to make it more milkshake-like than smoothie-like.
The biggest alteration here is the use of frozen bananas. While bananas are typically used in smoothies, freezing the bananas first actually gives these strawberry banana milkshakes a creamy, thick texture.
When frozen bananas are pureed, they turn into a frozen yogurt of sorts. It’s thick, creamy, and very, very sweet (I actually use it in this 3-ingredient strawberry banana sorbet recipe!) It is the perfect ingredient for these milkshakes, because it has a similar texture and thickness to ice cream while being naturally sweet.
When the frozen bananas are mixed with strawberries, almond milk, and a dash of vanilla extract, this healthier milkshake is sweet and guilt-free! This way, you do not have to compromise between your swimsuit and your desperate need to survive the summer sun!
While it is not as creamy and sweet as a true, ice cream-and-milk-laden milkshake, it is a nice compromise!
Hallelujah!
- 2-3 large frozen bananas (trust me--peel the bananas first, then freeze them)
- 8-10 strawberries, sliced in half
- 1/4 cup milk, almond milk, or coconut milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pour all ingredients in a high-powered blender, and blend until all ingredients are combined.
- Divide strawberry banana milkshake between two 8oz glasses.
