I’ve spent a lot of my life in coffee shops.

It didn’t begin that way (there was a dark period where I didn’t drink anything related to coffee or tea—granted, I was a child, but you know 😉), but I’ve been making up for lost time in the recent years.

It wasn’t until college that I found out just how much I loved all coffee and tea, and by extension, how much I loved coffee shops. Luckily, I went to school in an area where there were tons of different little coffee houses so I could truly cultivate my love of all things bold, dark and strong.

One of those places was known for its chai latte, and let me tell you, it was definitely worth the hype.

Since I’m not local anymore, I can’t just drive down the road and pick one up. However, this homemade version is pretty close to that coffee shop chai latte (and dare I say…better??).

Easy chai latte and how to froth almond milk

Making a chai latte at home is really as simple as 1-2-3.

Now, no two chai lattes are ever really the same. You can use different spices or different blends of spices (this can be anything from cinnamon, cardamon, nutmeg, all spice, cloves, black pepper, anise, etc.), different milks (almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, whole milk, etc.), and either black tea or a chai black tea.

For this recipe, to truly keep this an “easy chai latte,” I used simple, easy ingredients:

  1. chai black tea (these tea bags are already spiced with chai flavors)
  2. almond milk (I love how the almond flavor pairs perfectly with chai)
  3. maple syrup (you can use any sweetener)
  4. Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping
  5. cinnamon (of course, you could add any extra spices you wanted)

Why did I make this Easy Chai Latte with almond milk?

For a couple of reasons, actually. First of all, I’ve been dying to try out Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping. As a huge fan of almond flavor, I was pretty certain this was going to be out-of-this-world good (and it is), and to fully enhance that almond flavor, I went with almond milk for this recipe.

Secondly, I love that this whole recipe is dairy free. From the Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping to the almond milk, the whole drink is free from dairy. The flavors pair so perfectly with the chai that all people (dairy free and dairy lovers alike) are sure to love this chai latte.

Since I’ve brought up Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping, let’s talk about the finer points of this awesome product.

There is no dairy, no gluten, no artificial sweeteners or artificial flavors in Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping. Basically, it’s All of the Goodness, None of the Dairy. (Mic drop.)

Also, for those looking for a vegan option, look no further. This is made with almond milk, and it has all of the Reddi-wip® goodness you know and love free of dairy, gluten, and artificial flavors and sweeteners. While this is not a low-calorie food, it is only 10 calories per serving.

You can find this at your local Walmart! It’s in the refrigerated dairy section.

Tips and Tricks for this Easy Chai Latte with Almond Milk

  • Not all almond milks froth the same. Milk needs fat to froth so to get almond milk to froth, it does need a little bit of fat. Different brands of almond milks have different fat content so if your almond milk doesn’t froth, look for another one that has a higher fat content.
  • Okay, so how to froth almond milk? There are a couple different ways that I’ve found to work successfully every time. First of all, your almond milk needs to be hot. Once it’s hot, you can either use an electric frother (for almond milk, I’ve had more success with a hand electric frother than a standing one), or you can froth almond milk in a french press. Pour the milk into a french press and pull the handle up and down vigorously until the milk begins to froth.
  • I like my chai lattes strong, thus I steep my chai tea bags in a little water for 10 minutes or so. If you prefer them a little less intense, use more water for less time.
  • Feel free to add more spices if you like an extra spiced chai latte. I typically like to use cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.

Easy Chai Latte with Almond Milk

Prep: 15 minutes
Cook: 3 minutes
Total: 18 minutes
This easy chai latte is made with almond milk and is sweetened with maple syrup! Making a chai latte at home is easier than you might think and it only takes a few ingredients. This homemade chai latte recipe is also dairy free.

Ingredients

  • 2 chai tea bags
  • 3/4 cup water (hot)
  • 1 1/2-2 cups almond milk
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup (or to taste)
  • Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping
  • cinnamon (or extra spices for sprinkling on top)

Instructions

  • Steep chai tea bags in hot water for 10-12 minutes or so (if you prefer your chai a little less intense, you can either use more water, steep for less time or both).
  • Remove the tea bags and split the chai tea in two mugs (larger sized mugs).
  • Add about 1/2 Tbsp of maple syrup (more or less depending upon how sweet you like your chai lattes) to each mug.
  • Heat almond milk until it is almost ready to boil (depending upon how big your mugs are, you can use anywhere from 1 1/2 cups to 2 cups of almond milk).
  • Transfer to a bowl or cup where you can use a handheld electric milk frother. Alternatively, you can use a french press to froth your milk; pour the milk in your french press and pump the handle up and down until the milk begins to froth.*
  • Divide the almond milk between the two mugs.
  • Top each chai latter with Reddi-wip® Almond Non-dairy whipped topping. Sprinkle with cinnamon or other spices if desired.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

*If you do not have an electric frother or french press, you do not need to froth the milk. You can heat the milk and pour it into your drink. However, you might need to use a little more milk, as frothing gives milk a bit more body/volume.
